2019 - PRESENT (CONSTRUCTION)
Project Team: Louise Allen, Philip Stejskal
Client: Liz Calcott & Grant Rookes
Builder: Owner Builder
Model Photography: PSA

A new house on a sloping bush site in the Perth Hills.

Developed with our clients to capture views to the city and across the nearby valley. To take advantage of mature trees on the south-facing slope, yet capture maximal north light.

To follow the natural fall of the land; to stay as grounded as possible whilst optimising prospect.

The result: a home comprising two wings, one for living, the other for sleeping. One cuts across the slope and sits flat. The other, cascades with it. Both sit on a rammed earthen plinth that extends upwards as blade walls in places. Atop this base sit a pair of broad roofs that extend well beyond the internal footprint to provide generous shade to windows below. A grid of slender steel columns rise from the earthen base to provide the necessary support for this canopy.

Rammed earth is met by galvanised steel and pre-finished cement fibre to ensure the building endures well and without much effort.

It is intended as a home that is well-grounded, waist down.
